Labcorp and Quest Diagnostics see solid growth on the horizon for laboratory companies as health systems try to blunt financial headwinds and patients seek more on-demand services. After acquiring lab assets from systems such as Minneapolis-based Allina Health, Columbus, Ohio-based OhioHealth, Franklin, Tennessee-based Community Health Systems and Fort Wayne, Indiana-based Parkview Health, the two dominant national commercial laboratory companies have set their focus on broadening test menus and direct-to-patient offerings.

Quest Diagnostics announced that Apple Health app users across most of the United States will be able to conveniently purchase a tailored Quest laboratory test panel that includes over 50 biomarkers directly through the app on iPhone and iPad later this year. The Quest laboratory panel is designed to deliver preventive health insights and includes biomarkers for assessing cardiometabolic health and organ function.

Medicare’s expansion of coverage for A1c for diabetes screening in 2024 was followed by significant increases in use of the test and detection of prediabetes, new data showed. The researchers compared laboratory data from Quest Diagnostics from January 1, 2022, to September 30, 2023, with data from the same period in 2024-2025. “This is the first study I’m aware of that specifically looks at how the testing patterns changed after Medicare adopted the rule,” said co-investigator Jason Ng, MD, clinical professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh.

Now, for the first time, you can test your biological age when you get your next round of blood work. Humanity Health Inc. and Quest Diagnostics are launching “Humanity Biological Age.” This test is available in the U.S. via questhealth.com. It’s a $29 add-on to certain existing Quest blood panels (like the Elite Health Profile or Men’s/Women’s Comprehensive Health Profiles) with no extra blood draw needed.

More than 860 North Carolinians have tested positive for Cyclospora this summer. They join thousands of Americans nationwide testing positive for the parasite at levels the country has never seen before. Two North Carolina cases have now been tied to a multistate outbreak involving shredded lettuce. A Cyclospora diagnosis requires a stool sample. In North Carolina, many of those samples during this summer’s historic rise in cases have been sent to Quest Diagnostics. “It’s been a busy summer, to say the least,” said Dr. Ann MacIntyre, senior medical director for infectious diseases at Quest Diagnostics.

Samples—and a certain stink—are accumulating at Quest Diagnostics thanks to the cyclosporiasis outbreak. On a laboratory table that normally sits empty, hundreds of feces samples are arranged in stacks six vials high. They’ve traveled by ground and plane, across seven different eastern U.S. states, for one purpose: to be tested for parasites, including cyclospora. And they’re coming faster than scientists here can test them. At Quest’s Clifton lab, workers are putting in extra hours.

Women with vaginosis are around three times as likely to also test positive for gonorrhea, chlamydia or other bacterial sexually transmitted infections, a new study says. The study results confirm guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that women being treated for bacterial vaginosis should be tested for STIs, which can present with similar symptoms, researchers said in the journal O&G Open. "STIs can lead to serious reproductive and other health complications when left undetected and untreated,” senior researcher Dr. Damian Alagia said in a news release.

As the liquid biopsy space has exploded in recent years, clinical laboratories are struggling to find sufficient staff to oversee and run these assays. "The problem is real," agreed Thomas Koch, senior VP and global head of research and development at Quest Diagnostics, adding that liquid biopsy "is a very fast-growing field with many players." Beyond the rise in demand for testing, test complexity has also contributed to the workforce shortage. Liquid biopsy tests often feature workflows involving dozens of steps along with sophisticated chemistries, hardware, software, and data analysis tools. "It's an entire ecosystem that is a little different from the standard clinical laboratory where you do, say, a calcium test, and then report it out," said Quest's Koch.

Quest Diagnostics on Thursday raised its full-year profit forecast, after demand for routine diagnostic testing helped the company beat second-quarter estimates. Shares of the New ‌Jersey-based company rose about 5% in premarket trading following the results. Demand for the company's diagnostic testing services was strong across its physician, hospital and consumer channels, Quest said. The results were "well above what ⁠was widely expected," Barclays analysts said.

Framing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as a large-scale problem often obscured by percentages, Damian Alagia, III, MD, MS, MBA, FACS, Chief, Hospital and Health Systems, and Senior Medical Director, Advanced Diagnostics / Women's Health, Quest Diagnostics, argued that universal, non-judgmental testing is central to reaching reproductive-age women. Alagia said absolute figures convey the scale more effectively than rates, noting over 1.5 million patients annually with chlamydial infections, some 190,000 patients with syphilis, and nearly 4,000 babies with congenital syphilis, in 2024 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Nearly one in five American workers tested positive for drug use in long-term screenings last year, driven by a rise in cannabis consumption that is forcing companies to reevaluate their hiring practices. According to new data from Quest Diagnostics, 19.1 percent of workers screened via hair analysis in 2025 returned a positive result, representing a 46 percent increase from 2021. Marijuana accounted for 52.5 percent of those positive hair tests.

The Quest Diagnostics Foundation said this week that it has awarded nearly $5 million in grant funding to four Miami-area non-profits to improve chronic and maternal health outcomes. With the funding, which was granted to the Florida International University Foundation, Urban Health Partnerships, The Health Council of South, and US Hunger, the Quest Diagnostics Foundation aims to expand healthcare access in the area, including through no-cost lab testing.

Quest Diagnostics said Wednesday that its Haystack MRD test has received approval from the New York State Department of Health's Clinical Laboratory Evaluation Program (CLEP) for use in identifying residual or recurring disease in patients with a range of solid tumors. With the approval, Haystack MRD is now available for patient testing in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Quest launched the circulating tumor DNA liquid biopsy test in late 2024.

A hard-to-kill species of pneumonia-causing bacteria that has traditionally been found mainly in hospitals is now spreading in U.S. community settings, according to research that could help lead to new treatments. To learn more about its patterns of spread, researchers analyzed multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae detected in urine and blood samples from more than 2,000 people in 42 states at local offices ⁠of Quest Diagnostics, a leading provider of outpatient laboratory testing.

Over the past year, Alzheimer’s blood testing has moved from research into clinical practice. Since May 2025, the field has seen its first US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-cleared blood test and its first clinical practice guideline for blood-based biomarkers. Blood testing may also reduce the number of patients referred for amyloid PET imaging. Michael Racke, MD, medical director of neurology at Quest Diagnostics, points to research he co-authored suggesting that a blood test measuring amyloid beta 42 and 40 proteins (Aβ42/40) could reduce PET scan evaluations by about 40% by helping rule out Alzheimer’s disease as the cause of mild cognitive impairment. “Ruling out Alzheimer’s disease can prompt investigation of non-Alzheimer’s disease causes of mild cognitive impairment or dementia. When patients receive the right care at the right time, unnecessary costs may be reduced,” Racke says.

Chronic medical issues are frustrating for both doctors and patients, who just want to feel better. Tammie Robie, 51, struggled for nearly 20 years with blood pressure that was resistant against multiple medications. She pushed through her days as a wife, mother, teacher and competitive runner. Dr. Sanjay Dixit, the medical director for Quest Diagnostics, said PA was considered uncommon for many years. “Primary aldosteronism occurs when the adrenal glands produce too much aldosterone, a hormone that helps regulate sodium and potassium in the blood,” he said. The adrenal glands are located on top of the kidneys. According to Dixit, the Endocrine Society recommended in 2025 that all patients with hypertension be evaluated for PA. He notes that nearly half of all adults, or nearly 120 million people, have high blood pressure.

Postpartum body odor and sweating are common and generally not a cause for concern. Hormonal changes, milk production, and excess fluid shedding contribute to postpartum body odor. Damian Pat Alagia III, MD, MS, MBA, medical director for women’s health at Quest Diagnostics, explains that a pregnant person gains up to 10 pounds of amniotic fluid, blood, and other fluids.“Once the baby is born, the fluid needs somewhere to go," Dr. Alagia adds. Because of this, postpartum parents often experience increased sweating. "This is the body’s way of flushing out these excess fluids.”

Primary aldosteronism (PA) is a serious condition that affects as many as 5 to 10 percent of adults with high blood pressure (BP). High BP is widely prevalent in the U.S., nearly half of all adults (almost 120 million individuals) have it. Yet, for many years, PA was considered uncommon. However, recent research shows PA is both prevalent and under-detected. Untreated, it significantly raises risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the major cause of dementia worldwide that leads to morbidity, long term care utilization, and significant healthcare costs. Dr. Yonghong Li and his colleagues at Quest Diagnostics performed a study to determine the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of using blood-based biomarker as a triage in Alzheimer’s disease testing.
